Car Repair Financing With Bad Credit: How to Cover a $1,500 to $6,000 Repair

Last checked

The shop calls with the diagnosis: transmission, head gasket, or a timing job, and the estimate is several thousand dollars. You need the car for work, your credit is not great, and the counter has a financing brochure on it.

This guide compares the ways to pay, from the cheapest to the ones to avoid, and shows what each costs on a $3,500 repair. It is part of our financing guides organized by need.

Key takeaways

  • Get a written estimate first. The FTC says it should state that the shop will contact you for approval before going over a set amount.
  • A federal credit union Payday Alternative Loan can cover up to $2,000 with an application fee of no more than $20.
  • On a $3,500 repair over 24 months, the bank personal loan average costs $448.72 in interest; the average card rate for accounts charged interest costs $863.92.
  • The CFPB found that one in five single-payment auto title loan borrowers had their vehicle seized. Avoid putting up the car you are trying to fix.

What should you do before financing a car repair?

Lock down the price, because every dollar you shave off is a dollar you do not borrow.

The FTC's auto repair guidance is specific:

For a large job, a second estimate from another shop is often worth a tow. Also ask whether the repair can be split: what must be fixed now for the car to be safe and drivable, and what can wait a month.

What are your car repair financing options with bad credit?

Here are the common choices, cheapest first. Costs vary by lender and by your credit history; nobody can promise approval.

Credit union Payday Alternative Loans

Federal credit unions can make small loans under a special federal rule, 12 CFR 701.21. A PAL I runs $200 to $1,000 over one to six months; a PAL II goes up to $2,000 over up to 12 months. The application fee "in no case exceeds $20." The rate can be up to 1,000 basis points above the NCUA Board's maximum; with that ceiling at 18% through September 10, 2027, the PAL maximum works out to 28% APR. A credit union may make no more than three PALs to one borrower in a rolling six months, and you must be a member (for a PAL I, for at least one month).

A PAL will not cover a full transmission, but it can cover the part of the bill your savings cannot. For smaller gaps, see our guides to $1,000 loan options and $2,000 loans with bad credit.

Personal loans

An unsecured personal loan gives you a fixed payment and a fixed end date, with no lien on the car. The trade-off is price at lower credit scores, plus any origination fee taken out of the loan amount.

Representative example. For a $5,000 loan at a 10% APR over 36 months, the monthly repayment would be $161.34. Over the term, the total repayment would amount to $5,808.24, with $808.24 in interest. The loan terms range from 6 months to 12 years, with APRs between 5.99% and 35.99%. The exact rate you receive depends on factors like your creditworthiness, loan size, and repayment schedule. Better rates are typically offered to those with excellent credit.

Shop financing and repair credit cards

Many shops offer a store or repair credit card with a promotional period. Read the fine print for the phrase "no interest if paid in full." That is deferred interest. The CFPB explains that if the balance is not paid in full by the end of the promo, or you are more than 60 days late on a minimum payment, interest is charged on each month's balance going back to the purchase date. Divide the repair bill by the promo months; if you cannot pay that every month, compare the card's regular APR against a personal loan instead.

How much does a $3,500 car repair cost to finance?

Here is a $3,500 repair paid off in 24 equal monthly payments at the two Federal Reserve averages. These are illustrations, not offers, and rates at weaker credit run higher.

Why are car title loans risky for repairs?

Because you pledge the very thing you are trying to keep. In its May 18, 2016 report, the CFPB found that the typical single-payment auto title loan was about $700 with a typical APR of about 300%, that more than four in five were renewed on the day they came due because borrowers could not repay in one payment, and that one in five borrowers had their car or truck seized.

Put those numbers together. A 300% APR is 25% per month, so a $700 loan costs about $175 for 30 days. If you can only pay the fee and renew five times, you have paid about $875 in fees and still owe the $700. And if the lender takes the car, you lose the way you get to work.

Before a title loan, ask three questions. Can the shop hold the car for a week while you apply for a credit union PAL? Can the repair be split into what is needed now and what can wait? Can a family member lend part of it with a written payback plan? Any of those usually costs less than a title loan.

Can you get a car repair loan with no credit check?

Some lenders advertise it, and those offers are usually the high-cost end of the market, such as payday and title loans. A federal credit union PAL is not "no credit check," but the rule points credit unions to underwriting such as verifying employment with recent pay stubs, which can work for members whose scores are low.

What to do next

  1. Get the estimate in writing and ask what is urgent versus what can wait.
  2. Ask your credit union about a PAL, or join one you are eligible for.
  3. Compare a personal loan's total cost with any shop card offer.
  4. If you take a promo card, set the payment that clears it before the deadline.
  5. Keep the title in your glove box, not with a lender.

Frequently asked questions

Can I finance a car repair with bad credit?

Often, though nobody can promise approval or a rate. Credit union PALs, personal loans and repair credit cards are the usual routes. Costs rise as credit scores fall, so compare total cost before you sign.

Do mechanics offer payment plans?

Some shops offer in-house plans or a repair credit card through a partner. If the offer says "no interest if paid in full," it is likely deferred interest, which the CFPB explains is charged back to the purchase date if the balance is not cleared in time.

How do I pay for a transmission repair I can't afford?

Start with a written estimate and a second quote, ask whether a rebuilt or used unit is an option, then combine savings with a credit union PAL or a personal loan. Avoid a title loan on the same car.

What is the cheapest way to finance a car repair?

For credit union members, a Payday Alternative Loan caps the application fee at $20 and the rate at 28% APR, on amounts up to $2,000. For larger amounts, a personal loan at a lower APR usually costs less than carrying the balance on a credit card at average rates.

Are car title loans a good idea for repairs?

They carry a high risk. The CFPB found typical APRs around 300% and that one in five single-payment title loan borrowers had their vehicle seized.
