$50,000 Personal Loan: Which Lenders Go That High, and What They Expect

Last checked

Key takeaways

  • Five of the eight lenders we checked publish a maximum of $50,000 or more: SoFi, LightStream, Upstart, Upgrade and Best Egg. Discover, Avant and OneMain top out below $50,000.
  • At 12.53% APR, $50,000 costs $1,125.66 a month over 5 years or $896.87 over 7 years. The longer term adds $7,797.48 in interest.
  • On a $10,000 gross monthly income with $1,500 of existing debt, the 5-year payment puts your DTI at about 26.3%.
  • LightStream describes its loans as for borrowers "with good to excellent credit." At this size, a strong score mostly buys a lower rate, which is worth thousands.
  • If you own a home, a HELOC may cost less, but it is usually variable-rate and puts the home at risk.

A $50,000 unsecured loan is at or near the top of what most online lenders offer. This guide, part of our personal loans hub, covers who lends that much, what the payment looks like over 5 to 7 years, and what lenders will want to see.

A published maximum is a ceiling, not an offer. SoFi notes that the amount you may qualify for "depends on several factors, including lender policies and your credit profile," and reports that its average personal loan funded in 2024 was around $33,000. For a closer look at one of these lenders, see our SoFi personal loan review.

What is the monthly payment on $50,000 over 5 to 7 years?

Equal monthly payments, no fee:

APR60 months84 months
10%$1,062.35/mo, $13,741.00 interest$830.06/mo, $19,725.04 interest
12.53%$1,125.66/mo, $17,539.60 interest$896.87/mo, $25,337.08 interest
20%$1,324.69/mo, $29,481.40 interest$1,110.31/mo, $43,266.04 interest

The 12.53% row uses Bankrate's average as of September 23, 2026, which is measured on a $5,000, three-year loan for a 700 FICO borrower. Large loans to strong borrowers may price differently, so treat it as a reference. With an origination fee deducted from proceeds, you would need to borrow more than $50,000 to receive $50,000.

Representative example. For a $5,000 loan at a 10% APR over 36 months, the monthly repayment would be $161.34. Over the term, the total repayment would amount to $5,808.24, with $808.24 in interest. The loan terms range from 6 months to 12 years, with APRs between 5.99% and 35.99%. The exact rate you receive depends on factors like your creditworthiness, loan size, and repayment schedule. Better rates are typically offered to those with excellent credit.

Seven years is expensive. At 12.53%, stretching from 60 to 84 months lowers the payment by $228.79 but adds $7,797.48 in interest. At 20%, the extra two years add $13,784.64.

What income do you need for a $50,000 loan?

None of the eight lenders we checked publishes a minimum income on the pages we reviewed. What they assess is whether the payment fits. The CFPB defines debt-to-income as "all your monthly debt payments divided by your gross monthly income," and lists it as one way lenders measure your ability to repay.

The 5-year payment at 12.53% ($1,125.66) at three income levels:

Gross monthly incomeNew payment onlyWith $1,500 existing debt
$10,00011.3%26.3%
$15,0007.5%17.5%
$20,0005.6%13.1%

If your DTI is high once the payment is added, a smaller loan may be both easier to get and cheaper. Our $25,000 personal loan guide covers that range.

What credit score do you need for $50,000?

No lender here publishes a minimum score for this amount. LightStream describes its loans as for borrowers "with good to excellent credit" and states that "lowest rates require excellent credit." myFICO labels 740 to 799 as Very Good and 800 and above as Exceptional.

At $50,000, the score's main effect is price. Over 5 years, the difference between 10% and 20% APR is $15,740.40 in interest. myFICO weights payment history at 35% and amounts owed at 30% of a FICO Score, so lowering card balances before you apply is the fastest lever most borrowers have. If you are already above 800, our guide to personal loans at an 800 credit score covers how to use that position when comparing offers.

Is a HELOC cheaper than a $50,000 personal loan?

Often on rate, with real trade-offs. Bankrate's national survey put the average rate on a $30,000 HELOC at 7.29% on October 1, 2026, with a range of 3.99% to 11.60%. As a rough illustration only, $50,000 repaid evenly over 7 years at 7.29% would be $761.74 a month and $13,986.16 in interest, about $11,351 less than the personal loan at 12.53% over the same term.

The CFPB is direct about the risks. A HELOC borrows against your home, and "If you fall behind or can't repay the loan on schedule, you could lose your home." HELOCs "usually have a variable interest rate," and payments "are often significantly higher once you enter repayment." For renovation spending specifically, our home improvement loan vs HELOC guide compares the two structures in detail.

Whether you would qualify for a HELOC depends on your equity, credit score and debt-to-income ratio; see HELOC requirements.

Who this is for

You need $40,000 to $60,000, you have strong credit and steady income, and you want to know which lenders reach that amount and whether a home equity product would cost less.

What to do next

  1. Confirm the lender's published maximum reaches your amount before you prequalify.
  2. Calculate DTI with the new payment included.
  3. Prequalify with three lenders and compare APR, fee and total of payments on the same term.
  4. If you own a home, price a HELOC and weigh the variable rate and the lien on your home.

Common questions

Can I get a $50,000 personal loan?

Several lenders publish maximums at or above $50,000. Whether you are offered that much depends on your credit, income and debts, and approval cannot be promised.

What is the payment on a $50,000 loan for 7 years?

At 10% APR, $830.06 a month. At 12.53%, $896.87. At 20%, $1,110.31. Upgrade publishes terms up to 84 months and SoFi up to 7 years.

Do I need excellent credit for $50,000?

Not always, but strong credit makes a large approval more likely and lowers the rate. LightStream, for one, markets its loans to borrowers with good to excellent credit.

Is it better to take two smaller loans?

Each full application is reviewed separately and each loan can carry its own fee. One loan, from a lender whose published range covers the amount, is simpler to compare on APR and total cost.

How long does funding take for a large loan?

It varies by lender. SoFi says funds could be available as quickly as the same day your loan is approved. Ask each lender what verification it needs so you can have documents ready.

How we researched this

We read eight lenders' product pages, Bankrate's personal loan and HELOC rate pages, two CFPB consumer pages and two myFICO education pages on October 1, 2026. Payments were computed with standard amortization.
