Do Multiple Personal Loan Inquiries Count as One? How Rate Shopping Really Works

Last checked

If you have heard that you can apply with several lenders within two weeks and it will count as one inquiry, that is true for some loans and some scoring models. For personal loans under the FICO Scores most lenders use, it is not something to count on. The safer way to shop is to compare offers with soft inquiries and send one formal application. This guide is part of our credit scores hub.

Key takeaways

  • The CFPB says inquiries within 14 to 45 days "for the same type of loan" are generally treated as one, and names student loan, auto loan and mortgage inquiries as the ones ignored for 30 days.
  • Experian says FICO's grouping "only applies to hard inquiries from student, auto and mortgage loans."
  • VantageScore says it treats hard inquiries within a 14-day period as a single inquiry, but your lender chooses which model it uses.
  • Prequalifying with soft inquiries lets you compare personal loan offers without any score effect.

Why do some loan inquiries count as one?

Scoring companies know that people shop for big loans. The CFPB explains that scoring models "don't penalize you for comparison shopping" and "generally count multiple credit inquiries as one credit inquiry as long as they take place within a reasonably short period of time." Its general rule: inquiries "within 14 to 45 days of each other for the same type of loan will be treated as no more than a single inquiry."

The CFPB adds that for the most common models, "student loan, auto loan and mortgage-related inquiries that occur 30 days prior to scoring have no effect at all on your credit score." myFICO describes the same 30-day buffer for "loans that commonly involve rate-shopping, such as mortgage, auto and student loans."

Are personal loan inquiries grouped together?

This is where the models differ, and where most advice gets vague.

Experian's wording on FICO is specific: FICO Scores count multiple hard inquiries from the same type of application as one, but "this 'deduplication' only applies to hard inquiries from student, auto and mortgage loans that occur within a 45-day window. Older FICO Scores use a shorter 14-day dedupe period."

On VantageScore, the descriptions vary. VantageScore's own consumer guide says it "considers all hard inquiries that take place in a 14-day period as a single inquiry," and Experian says VantageScore deduplicates most hard inquiries in a 14-day window "even if the hard inquiries are from different types of credit applications." TransUnion's rate-shopping article describes the VantageScore window as applying to inquiries "for one specific type of loan, like a mortgage or auto loan." Either way, the same TransUnion article suggests keeping shopping within 14 days to limit the impact "no matter which scoring models your lenders use."

You cannot control which model a lender pulls. myFICO notes that "each lender chooses which version of the FICO scoring formula it wants." So plan as if your personal loan inquiries will each count.

Three personal loan applications in 10 days: how two scoring models may count them Under FICO, Experian says grouping only covers student, auto and mortgage inquiries, so three personal loan hard inquiries may count as three. Under VantageScore, hard inquiries within 14 days are treated as one. Prequalifying with soft inquiries counts as zero under both. 3 personal loan applications in 10 days Hard inquiries counted by the score FICO (Experian's description) 3 VantageScore (14-day window) 1 Soft-pull prequalification, any model 0

How much do the extra inquiries cost?

Usually a little each, which adds up. myFICO says "for most people, one additional credit inquiry will take less than five points off their FICO Scores," and that inquiries count toward FICO Scores for a year while staying on the report for up to two. The bigger risk is how a cluster of new inquiries reads to the next lender. The CFPB notes most scoring models "look at how recently and how frequently you apply for credit," and the inquiries themselves are visible to anyone who pulls your report.

The cleanest way to shop. Compare offers with soft inquiries, then submit one formal application. A soft inquiry "will not affect your credit scores," per the CFPB, and lenders like Upgrade state that checking a rate uses only a soft inquiry. You get the comparison without the inquiry cluster.

How do you shop for a personal loan without extra hard inquiries?

  1. Check your own reports and score first. Your own requests are soft inquiries. Fix errors before a lender sees them.
  2. Prequalify with several lenders. Use lenders that say in writing that the rate check is a soft inquiry. Our guide to prequalifying for a personal loan with a soft pull lists what to record from each quote.
  3. Compare APR, fees and total of payments. The lowest monthly payment is not always the cheapest loan.
  4. Submit one formal application to the offer that fits. That is usually when the hard inquiry happens.
  5. If you must apply to more than one, keep the applications inside 14 days. It will not help under FICO for personal loans, per Experian's description, but it may under VantageScore, and it keeps your file from looking like a months-long search.

What if you were declined after shopping?

A denial comes with a written notice of the reasons, and inquiries can be one of them: "number of recent inquiries on credit bureau report" is one of the sample reasons in the federal model form in Regulation B (12 CFR Part 1002, Appendix C). Our guide to the adverse action notice decodes the rest. If your score is strong and you were still turned down, read why you can be denied a personal loan with good credit before applying again. Another application right away adds another inquiry without fixing the reason.

Who this is for

You are comparing personal loan offers and want to know whether several applications will hurt your credit more than one.

What to do next

  1. Prequalify with soft inquiries and line up your offers side by side.
  2. Apply once, to the offer with the best total cost you can afford.
  3. If you were declined, read the reasons on the notice before applying again.

Common questions

Do personal loan inquiries count as one if made within 14 days?

Under FICO Scores, Experian says inquiry grouping only applies to student, auto and mortgage loans, so personal loan inquiries may each count. VantageScore says it treats hard inquiries within 14 days as one. Your lender chooses the model.

Does prequalifying with several lenders hurt my credit?

Not when each lender uses a soft inquiry. The CFPB says soft inquiries do not affect your credit scores.

How long is the FICO rate-shopping window?

45 days for newer FICO Scores and 14 days for older ones, per myFICO and Experian, and only for student, auto and mortgage inquiries, per Experian.

Do credit card applications get grouped too?

Experian says FICO does not deduplicate inquiries from applications other than student, auto or mortgage loans, and suggests avoiding several credit card applications at once.

How many points will three personal loan applications cost?

There is no fixed number. myFICO says one additional inquiry typically takes less than five points off FICO Scores, with larger effects for thin files or many recent inquiries.

How we researched this
